What’s the Difference? I am fortunate to have been raised in a family with a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a record of sustained, superior performance in business. Encouraged by my grandmother and my parents, I spent every summer vacation throughout the period of my formal education working in a different business setting, both in the United States and in Venezuela. In retrospect, it is clear that those experiences formed the foundation for my strong bias in favor of business-related legal work. Ever since I received my first assignment as a new law school graduate at a major law firm, I have been excited about being an attorney. In those early days, I was fortunate to have three superb mentors, who taught me to focus on meeting the needs of the client in a responsive, creative, and ethical way. Because I was eager and intellectually curious, I quickly received additional responsibilities, of increasing complexity and difficulty. As a result, I experienced enormous variety in both the nature of the legal work I handled and the identity of clients whose legal issues and problems I worked on. (That variety is reflected in the questions set forth on the Home Page.) While that professional growth was very satisfying, I derived the greatest pleasure from facilitating business transactions and resolving business disputes for those who were frustrated, upset, and even angry with lack of progress and unnecessary expense or interference in their business activities. For me, the highest praise from a client always includes comments on my persistence and responsiveness, and the fact that I get it done on time, with a superior result.
